Recycling 101: How Valley Waste Makes Sorting Easy for You
October 1, 2025

Recycling doesn’t have to be complicated. At Valley Waste & Recycling Inc., we believe that making environmentally-friendly choices should be as simple and stress-free as possible. That’s why our recycling services are designed to help you with waste sorting, recycling, curbside collection, and more.

What can be recycled curbside in Chilliwack and the Fraser Valley?

In short, a lot. Most paper, plastic, and aluminum products can be easily recycled curbside. Simply empty and rinse out any food or drink containers to prevent contamination, remove lids and caps from bottles and food packaging, and flatten any cardboard. Then place your items in your collection bin, including:

  • Paper products like newspapers, flyers, magazines, and flattened cardboard including egg cartons and drink trays
  • Paper party supplies, gift wrap, and  gift bags
  • Empty aerosol cans (excluding spray paint)
  • Plastic and aluminum beverage containers, plastic cutlery and straws, and aluminum foil trays
  • Plastic clamshell packaging and food containers
  • Metal cans and tins

What about other items I can’t put in curbside recycling?

While many things can be recycled curbside, there are a few exceptions. Understanding how to sort your items can help you ensure they’re processed properly, reducing landfill waste and conserving resources.

Organic waste, like food scraps and yard trimmings, belong in your organics bin, while glass, plastic bags, and foam packaging can be recycled at your local depot, but not in your curbside bin.

Batteries, including household lithium batteries, should never be put in curbside recycling or garbage. Lithium batteries can ignite or explode when crushed and must be returned to a battery recycling drop-off point (available in many recycling centres and electronics stores) to avoid the risk of serious harm or fire. Where can I learn more about recycling and waste management?
